Every Marine knows the story; that on November 10th, 1775, the Continental Congress authorized the formation of 2 battalions of Marines under the command of Captain Samuel Nicholas. This is taught to every Marine at Parris Island, San Diego, and Quantico. However, many don’t know the history behind why the new nation needed a Marine Corps. The Marine Corps Museum shares a video of this history.
