Is Your Chapter Looking for Grants?

On November 27, 2013, MOS received a legal opinion on whether it is permissable for MOS members, who tend to be federal employees, to solicit grants from outside sources.
Katherine Austin, an attorney with IRS General Legal Services, responded to the question posed by Chris Stackfleth, co-president of the Peachtree Patriots Chapter.
Ms. Austin stated that MOS could seek grants from the private sector as long as the MOS member is not doing so in his or her official capacity as an IRS employee. She went on to explain the limits on fundraising that applies to our organization because we are federal employees.
She also stated that any MOS member who is a federal employee could NOT solicit a federal grant nor represent MOS during the grant making process.
If your chapter is contemplating pursuing grants, please read the legal opinion completely. If you have questions or need assistance, please contact the MOS national president.
