Request for Donations for Recovering Veteran

A Veteran'S Christmas Wish

By Debbie Young, HCO, BeST Austin, HR Specialist, MOS Communications

As many of us prepare to spend this holiday season with our family and loved ones, I ask that you keep in your thoughts the men and women in the military who are risking everything to take a stand against the occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan.

Several months ago, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) employee, Sgt. Michael Brown, was admitted into Walter Reed Army Medical Center (WRAMC). Michael, a SB/SE tax compliance officer, sustained injuries while serving in Afghanistan. His Mom (Sharon) flew to WRAMC to support her son’s recovery. During his recovery, the family experienced some financial hardship because the mother had been out of work for several months.

The Military Outreach Service (MOS) was in the process of electing the officials to stand-up this new employee organization. However, MOS Stand-up Committee Executives and nominees were contacted immediately. They were asked to provide the Brown family with resources and support to overcome the family’s financial strain.

The responses and concerns from MOS members to help the Brown family were overwhelming. Volunteers stepped up to the call of duty to help this IRS family member and immediately put into action. The organization was able to provide the family with local contact information for the Soldier and Family Assistance Center (SFAC) Liaison at WRAMC.

As Michael worked his way to recovery, he did not let his family situation interfere with his spirit or determination. As a result, he was released from the WRAMC about two weeks earlier than expected. The MOS members and volunteers sent get-well cards, donations, family support, and also were able to setup an account to provide additional monetary resources to the Brown family.

As we approach Christmas, let’s remember those U.S service men and women who maybe spending this holiday season in the hospital or overseas in arms way. But as we are celebrating festivities this year in our cozy homes in front of our tree opening gifts. Let's try in small way to pay a tiny bit of what we owe to the talented, dedicated, and motivated members of our armed forces men and women, especially to those who are part of the IRS family!

Your warm wishes and encouragement means a lot to these brave men who are facing much uncertainty and hardship. Please take a moment to send a donation of support this holiday season.

MOS-IRS comes through for Santa

With only three days notice, members of the newly approved employee organization Military Outreach for Services (MOS) in the Atlanta Summit Building helped Santa quickly bring some joy for more than 200 Army families.

MOS-IRS members from the Atlanta Summit Building (back row, left to right) Charles Styslinger, Ed Kelly, Johnnie Beale and Jon Bird, and (front row, left to right) Sharon Davis and Meliton Barron pose with part of the first delivery of toys they collected.

Fort McPherson commanders identified families that needed assistance providing Christmas gifts for more than 500 children. In these difficult economic times, the Army Community Service volunteer corps feared they would not have a gift for each child. So they made a few calls and MOS-IRS members came through with two vanloads of gifts. The gifts included clothing (coats, sweatshirts, pants, scarves and glove sets) footballs, soccer balls, basketballs, board games, radio sets, bath salts and lotion sets, perfumes and toys.

The mission of MOS is to provide support to veterans of the uniformed services of the United States (Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marines and Navy) who sacrificed so much through their efforts to defend our nation and further the cause of peace and freedom around the world. Areas of focus include recruitment and mentoring of veterans, assisting IRS employees with deployment and transition issues, and assisting the Disabled American Veterans and military families. Membership is open to all IRS employees.
