traces its history back to
4 August 1790
when the first Congress of the United States authorized the construction of ten vessels to enforce tariff and trade laws to prevent smuggling. In 1915, it took on additional responsiblities that includes saving life at sea and enforcing U.S. maritime laws by a merger of the
Life-Saving Service
and the
Revenue Cutter Service
