Announcements and News: MOS Not Impacted by IRS Scrutiny of Veterans Organizations

Title

MOS Not Impacted by IRS Scrutiny of Veterans Organizations

Body

Recent news reports revealed possible investigations of membership lists of veterans organizations, such as the American Legion. An article in the September 1, 2013, Wall Street Journal discussed congressional inquiries into IRS investigations.

MOS is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit charitable organization while the American Legion and certain other veterans organizations are 501(c)(19) organizations subject to different federal tax rules. The latter type of tax-exempt organization is required to maintain proof of military service of its membership.

John Gray, president of Military Outreach for Services (MOS), reiterated recently that MOS is a nonprofit organization that does not restrict its membership to military veterans, but rather, membership, as defined by the bylaws, is open to any federal employee interested in supporting military veterans. Members are not required to submit proof of military service to join MOS.
